Specialisation - Effects of Automation

Increasingly, automated systems are fusing with human skill-sets in previously unrecognised ways, substantially altering how we approach, conceptualise and perform tasks. Our work over five years has uncovered previously unknown real-world implications and put in place working solutions for large operators around the world.

Manual flying in Multi-Crew Helicopters: Discovery of pilots' fusing of automatic stabilisation modes with manual flying skills, fundamentally changing the way the task is performed.

RNP-AR: Creation of a conceptual model to support pilot understanding when flying RNP operations, trained by a flag-carrying airline.

A320 HUD Approach: Pilots unable to avoid integrating automation elements when no longer appropriate. Operation changed to remove those elements at specific times; increasing safety.

Electronic Checklists: Threats found related to automated checklists.
